Wang Sen
Sen Wang, character painter, has taught in the work room of modern craft, Ceramics Department, Central Arts and Crafts Academy in the 60s. In the 70s, he has been a student of celebrated painter Liu Jiyou. His character painting masterpiece is A Hundred heroes in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is jointed by 4 pieces of large paper and is about 17 meters’ long. As its title indicates, a hundred people of the three kingdoms are painted. Mei Qianping comments: I am really attracted by its charms at the first sight of it, which really reflects the painter’s well skill in painting, because every hero with his distinct disposition is really true to life. Sen Wang is eminent among the middle-aged painters. He cares little about fames, and usually likes staying at home and working very hard on creation. Therefore his creations always surprise people. Chinese character painting has developed since the 20th century, and modern character painting absorb western character painting’ s technique and forms a new teaching system. But the coexisting traditional painting method is still alive outside the academic teaching system with its unique way. So a book of model paintings serves as a bridge between teachers and students. Wang Sen, The Pithy Character Painting is a selected works by Wang Sen，functioning as model paintings. It thoroughly considers different style with different drawing technique of the character. Outline drawing, exquisite drawing with close attention to the detail, freehand painting, the combination of exquisite and freehand painting are widely used in the book. As for the subject matter, it includes historical character legend, Beijing folks, and people with traditional minority customs.
The book is divided into two parts, which is respectively printed by multicolor and monochrome. The multicolor part includes A Hundred Heroes in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Twelve Symbolic Animals, Stories of the Ancient Beijing, Sketches in Yun Nan; the monochrome part contains 108 Heroes in the Heroes of the Marshes or Water Margin, Beauties, Outline Drawing of the Beijing’s character, Materials of Line Drawing of Chinese Character Painting. Wang Sen has participated in the planning of the Inscription of thousands Li of Landscape, a gift to the Macao Special Administrative District by President Jiang Zemin. At the same time, He presided and planned the inscription of the hundreds of meter’s painting Lovely Landscape for Mr. Li Ruihuan. His Excellent Songs and Music of the Beijing Opera makes up the blank in Chinese history.
